The Challenge of People - John T (1)
In working with the challenge of taking a portrait, John chose to take a self portrait. Not an easy thing to do. Photographers love to be behind the camera, not in front! And doing self portrait challenges require you to really focus on the photo as both the photographer and the subject. John did a nice job of both.

Emily wanted to try a few special effects and unique poses. The results are awesome.
From color to black & white...
A sepia tone...
A great photo...and then tweaked with...what??? Perhaps Emily will tell us what filter or setting she used to get this interesting variation.
I think this may be my favorite photo of all those she shared. So many great "rules" at work here. The lines of the body are up and down while the lines of the blinds are horizontal. That rule of "if there are two, make them different" has her with each arm and each leg in a different position. And the rule of "if it bends, bend it" leaves each leg bent different, the next turned, the arm bent. This is a photo that combines so many rules in a good way.
And then Emily tweaked it with a black and white.
This last one...very interesting. A photo of her daughter but just focusing on one body part. The rest of her is missing. And yet, the photo is really nice.

Emily got a new camera for Christmas! And she can't put it down. Lots of really cool photos from her. I can't post them all, but will try to share a large sampling. First up, some nice candids of the kids...

Getting someone to just stand or sit still....not easy as a photographer. But Mary Alice convinced a few folks. Here are a couple of samples...

It is never easy convincing someone to stand still for a photo. But here are a couple of really nice shots...a candid and a small group.
Both of these capture some of the best rules of people photos. Bend things where they bend...arms and legs and waists. If you have two, make them be different - arms and legs in different positions...even slightly makes the photo more interesting. And use props! People are often more natural holding a computer, a cup of coffee, a pen, anything that prevents them from having to think about what to do with their hands.

First photos from Laurie - part 1
Laurie has taken a lot of photos since our group started in October. More than 500! And in that process, she has made a discovery. She loves working with light! Whether it is moving the camera to create interesting effects or shooting through an object to capture the reflections and refractions of light, she loves creating with light! So she chose a few for her first sharing. Enjoy!
